Social networks have 4.62 billion users worldwide, equivalent to 58% of the population, according to the Digital 2022 Global Overview Report.
Videos, photos, reels, tiktoks, texts and memes are just some of the content formats that are shared on social networks every minute. Their use is increasingly global, as explained in the Digital 2022 Global Overview Report. According to the report, in 2021 social network users grew by 10% compared to 2020.
In other words, there are currently 4.62 billion people in the world using these tools. Of this total, 424 million were tempted by the networks in 2021, which is equivalent to 1 million new users per day or approximately 13 new subscribers every second.
The favorite networks
According to the report, WhatsApp tops the global rankings, with 15.7% of users choosing the messaging app as their social platform. It is followed by Instagram with 14.8% and Facebook with 14.5%. WeChat gets enough recognition to take fourth place, despite 99% of the platform’s votes coming from users in China.
The Asian country is home to approximately 20% of the world’s total Internet users, so it is perhaps not surprising to see such a large impact on these global rankings.
The favorites are not always the most used, as the report indicates that Facebook is the social network with the most active users in the world, followed by video platform YouTube and WhatsApp.
Time spent on social networks
The study also reveals that a “typical” user spends almost seven hours a day using the Internet on all devices. With an average of two hours and 27 minutes per day, social networks account for most of the time connected, or 35% of the total.
The time spent on networks grew over the last year, with an increase of two minutes per day.
